Beyond individuals, the more important societal consequence of this's the below replacement level fertility and results of it. I think that's the even more interesting aspect.

I decided to rewatch this documentary The Miracle of Life recently. I was a fan of the work of Lennart Nilsson. His work showing the stages of fetal development via photography was groundbreaking. The documentary itself was groundbreaking when it was released I believe in 1983. So 40 years ago. I was struck by how in the intro they said the population of earth was approximately 4 billion people. Now we’re at 8 billion people. I know the issues raised by population loss in certain countries and cultures. But on a species level of thinking is it the worst?

I never thought about the idea of not having siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins. So different from the way I was raised. I was raised in a town where your familial relationships and their ties to the greater community affect your own relationships. Where successive generations of families knew each other growing up. Hell I just got a rundown of the entire extended family in a nearby town because a clerk saw my last name on my debit card. They don’t have a common ancestor with me until back in the early 1800’s, but I got an update on all their business. Bless that clerks heart.

Good Lord , that sounds lovely and a far cry from the streets of sarf larndan. Where one clerk wants to pick your pocket and one put a penny or two innit.

What a series of events .. I wish the world could be as informed as your town cryer thier. Thanks for sharing that with me , have a wonderful day ❣️
