We need to make the new user and discovery in nostr. While we all win when open protocols win, but we need the users if we want the diverse open app ecosystem we want then we need nostr to build its user base.

The fact that they can pull those numbers at all says all you need to know about their "decentralization".

Unfortunately, most people don't actually want to fix the root cause, they just want a slightly nicer dictator.

nostr:npub1wmr34t36fy03m8hvgl96zl3znndyzyaqhwmwdtshwmtkg03fetaqhjg240 I'm curious, what do you think is bringing in all those users? Is it really just "discovery"?

Waitlist. That’s how a lot of these unknown startups grow. They make people ask around for invite codes. Clubhouse did the same.

I try do my design part. Some new ideas

Any indications about the number of Nostriches ?

I agree with you, I'm having a hard time on Plebstr for Android, it's basically DEAD, everytime I access the App all I get is nostr:npub13wfgha67mdxall3gqp2hlln7tc4s03w4zqhe05v4t7fptpvnsgqs0z4fun translating in different languages, cryptic topics from verified users, I mean is everyone on this network a coder or programmer or Bitcoin Bull, nobody discusses actual topics of social interest or news articles, no images, etc, I contacted support a few months back, asking them when would users get an InApp wallet where we can earn Sats, like TweetoshiApp, they said soon, it's been 8 months now. I can't get any Sats or Zaps, even when posting original content, it's frustrating, and I follow the people who are developing the platform????

Just yesterday I saw discontent with the lack of ”serious” discussion on Bsky meaning the pro networks have not migrated from X in that particular case.

Most of the complaints seem to be about lack of functionality on bsky. For example, no videos, and no lists (yet they are coming).

People are not content with Mastodon. X is becoming unbearable with spam and trolling. A lot of people are just quitting.

Nostr seems to be already in shape to answer these questions. Moderation tools are also at a level where I think we can start to take people in.

If we can target some specific niches, whole communities, that might be the most effective at this point.

Content discovery is crucial; we need to find a way to categorize content.

If we don't want to rely on algorithms, we should at least provide users with the ability to add category tags to their notes, such as Art, Tech, Dev, Politics with proper web of trust. Users should be able to subscribe to specific topics.

Agreed. Nostr has been feeling a bit stale and repetitive lately

Relays/indexers could do that with LLMs?

Lots to learn here. Certainly the onboarding, content management and UX is good.

However, the thing is that nostr cant handle that volume of users, even if we got all of that all right.

While app developers in nostr have been kindly supported, the nostr infrastructure has not been. Around 1000 relays have gone offline.

Something bluesky leadership did well, that nostr should learn from. We need to support both great apps, growth, and infrastructure. You need 3/3.

They also have significant private funding that helps to scale the infrastructure.

I don’t think we’ll win with more features like polls. We need better UX around using the apps, joining, explaining nostr to people who are neither bitcoiners (or other crypro folks who get wallets / keys) nor developers.

We can do this.

Shows that there's a lot of potential for nostr which is great

Agreed on focusing on UX now not later, and it's improving at tremendous pace which is awesome

I feel a lot of ppl make these decisions without ever seeing a nostr app

I think this line says a lot

"They just want to feel safe"

note1almcr7wtt4crdd8zfzfr6h8nuft4l30ar8aucqpekj637c2eprcqpkrgtu

There's an audience of ppl who just want Twitter-without-Elon (sorry Elon) and want to feel safe

Starting with the name

Bluesky

Relaxing, un-threatening, appealing, beautiful, open

The landing page https://bsky.app/

Clean, minimalist, professional, corporate-y, reassuring

Step 2, a walled-garden

Safe, keep those birds-of-prey out

Starting with the name nostr

What does that mean?

notes and other stuff transmitted by relays

What does that mean?

Where is the landing page?

Confusion => anxiety

I doubt nostr can follow the same growth path as Bluesky

It may likely be slower

But also inexorable

The tide coming in vs a surge

Riffing on Eliza's note

The first vector may be ppl living on or looking for the edges

Artists

Free spirits

Engineers

Homesteaders

Rootless travellers

Freedom tech pioneers

Dissidents esp in countries where KYC risks are huge

Ppl like me, old and jaded

Followed by the edgy and their groupies

Followed by more mainstream interests

Bluesky will attract those journalists who like a corporate-y official feel and their followers

All is highly speculative

I like what you said in your talk at nostrasia about getting feedback from real user testing... that would be great

To be a bit more action than words I'll test out on a few "volunteers"

I don't know where is a good place to start?

Which clients?

Or

Which profile generators?

Or

Which "about nostr" landing pages?

Maybe this is the first UX question for nostr ... where to start? 😃
