Many of the "American" posts on Xiaohongshu are actually Chinese people pretending to be American. Apparently the CCP wants this story to be bigger. You can tell by the apostrophe character. The Chinese keyboard's apostrophe character works differently and ends up inserting a "full-width" apostrophe, whereas Americans would never insert such unicode points.
Interesting. Makes sense that they’d want the TikTok ban be an embarrassment to US. Would not surprise me if most of those accounts and downloads are fake.
Not so sure about that. While there will definitely be Chinese pretenders I’ve been on the RedNote app all week and there’s plenty - I’d say overwhelming numbers - of genuine accounts.
That’s not to say there’s a psyop element included. Like much of life, the actual truth lies somewhere in the middle.
Clearly there are Westerners on there. We've all heard the story, plenty of us will go take a look. And I'm glad free speech can't be stopped.
But free speech includes misinformation and influence campaigns, so I think if someone supports free speech, that should include the speech that exposes such things.
I got my data from a Chinese woman who married one of my friends. I was talking with my friend about this thing and he said hs wife is mad because a lot of these "Americans" she can tell are Chinese people pretending, and then he explained the apostrophe to me. Funny thing is I thought that she was pro-CCP, her family from Beijing and she defended the CCP in prior arguments. I guess like everybody else she isn't simply one sided.
