It depends on what you want to do. You want a NAS, or you want to self host your own services? There are tons of options either way. This set up is bitcoin specific, but it's based on using docker on Ubuntu server, which is a good way to run other services as well.
so first use case would be to store photos and create shared folders with my family. but I would also like to start to experiment with services in general.
Then you probably want to have a NAS (network attached storage). All you need is a uses computer with some storage. You can install Ubuntu server and learn docker, or there are other more user friendly options like using TrueNAS Scale, which handles a lot of it for you.
