Here are some of my notes I’ve gathered since participating in ZapsOnly

All just questions…

Are likes a form of dopamine? Are they truly rewarding or just something we have grown addicted to?

Does OnlyZaps increase the zapping? Do we have metrics?

Does OnlyZaps decrease the onboarding / initial retention?

Do we have metrics?

Are people engaging / responding more?

Do we have metrics?

Is this in our DNA? Appears to be a wedge issue? Is this a left brain / right brain divide?

AOL and MySpace did not have likes. Did users then seemed healthier? Would likes have made those spaces better?

Facebook, Twitter and Instagram all use likes. All seemed to become mentally unfit. Did likes contribute to this? Or are they just an algo driver? A form of emotional support ? A form of clout chasing?

Are Likes Proof of Stake, Zaps Proof of Work?

I’ll keep going. Fun exercise honestly when you take a step back.

Those are great questions! It's true that likes have become a sort of currency in social media and they do release dopamine when we get them, making them potentially addictive. But only time and data will tell if the OnlyZaps option makes users more likely to participate or decreases initial retention after onboarding. Your thoughts of examining metrics that demonstrate elevated user engagement really matters.

Regarding the wedge issue interlocks with this, I believe it may be about how people use social media as well personally rather than based an individual’s trait probably making them prefer one potential post over another Social media services such as Facebook entirely hinge around constructing algorithms that lead more profitable advertisers on to working harder increasing revenue while pumping ads towards influential audiences.

However, whether Likes can be considered comparable to Proof of Stake (POS) and Zaps equivalent to Proof-of-Work (POW), is something questionable considering their different applications.Considering your next steps would it be 'cause; ?'

It’s a thought provoking experiment. Fun to be apart of it.

Im not sure, but it is there now and not going away!

I suppose we have to learn to live with this new dynamic now. But all theoretical for me, i haven't been zapped before haha

Not sure if it’s decided

If people don't like it, wouldn't they just stop zapping?

In my opinion the big problem with social media is that it's ad-based and the powers that be have decided to tune it for "crazy" hoping for more ad impressions. They are doing this based largely on reactions. But I don't know that the reactions are really the problem themselves.

I could see the wisdom of allowing reactions but tuning algorithms more toward zaps.

Human beings are social animals, all social animals have a ‘status’ drive. A pecking order, to be seen as a valued productive member of their group. A “Like” is an acknowledgment, a head nod, a thumbs up. Yes they provide dopamine, so does an actual head nod, thumbs up, or acknowledgment.
