"Vanessa Thomas, 55, was berated by the store manager, who is trans, after the customer inadvertently called another employee behind the counter a woman.

The footage was filmed by her partner Mark Andrews, who revealed he also feared for his safety when the manager of the store – which is part-owned by a licensor – tried to take his mobile phone from him and break it.

Ms Thomas told MailOnline exclusively: ‘The video doesn’t tell you the whole story. It was very frightening and shocking. The Starbucks manager grabbed me and threw me out of the cafe. I could have been seriously injured or even killed because if Mark hadn’t caught me I would have ended up on the sidewalk.

“What happened was disgusting and so far we haven’t even received an apology from Starbucks. I am 100% not transphobic or trans anything. That’s just not me at all. This manager was behaving horribly and should be prosecuted for seriously assaulting me.”

“The manager just attacked me and could have really hurt both myself and Vanessa. He had his hands on my phone and then he tried to grab my arms to try and get him off me to prevent me from filming. We are both still very shocked and upset by what happened. We’ve never experienced anything like this before.’

The couple, who live on the Isle of Wight, revealed that they had gone to Southampton on April 30 to shop and were waiting for the ferry to return home at around 4.45pm.

Ms Thomas said the altercation started after she was informed by a Starbucks employee who served her that they do not accept cash payments.

She added: “I spoke to someone who I thought was a lady behind the counter who served me. I complained that this is another company that doesn’t take cash and that I don’t like using contactless cards because I don’t want anyone to know what I’m buying.

‘The manager of the trans store then jumped in and I said, ‘I’m not talking to you, I’m talking to the lady behind the counter.’ And then the store manager went all out, came out from behind the counter and confronted me.”

"When the argument broke out, Mrs. Thomas demanded a refund, but was denied by the store manager.

She added, “I wasn’t trying to offend anyone. I have no problem with whatever gender people want to be. It was a real mistake as from what I could tell the person behind the counter was a woman. But genders aren’t that simple these days, that’s fine, but it can be confusing.’
