Just a thought...

I think a great step in that direction could be location based group chats. I wanna be in the "who want to go for a swim"-type chatgroups only when physically present in that area. When I leave the area, I leave the group chat, and auto-rejoin when I get back.

Another example is work group chats that only make sense to be in when you're working at that moment on the company's premises.
