> nostr growth and clients shouldn’t be made only to bring people we agree with or like, it’s for everyone.

Yes they should, and yes it is. This is a really interesting point (and well put). I personally build for the people I'm interested in helping. I'm not interested in a tiktok use case, because I think it's not a good technology. But I really don't mind if someone builds it because they do believe in it, especially if it brings more people to nostr.

why do you think the tiktok use case is not a good technology? isnt that use case simply short form video content?

It’s literally designed to manipulate brains and harm children’s ability to develop.

that’s literally every social media and youtube especially.

its all pretty bad.

the tiktok algorithm is designed to do that, and I’m sure their app is designed to mine data and god knows what else.

but the core of it, short form video, is what I am talking about. I think short form video built on freedom tech like nostr and bitcoin would be great.

i agree.

Short form video doesn’t work if not inside a manipulative application. Vine died because it wasn’t properly manipulating its users. The app literally gives you the tools needed to create the content that is appropriate for it to serve up and manipulate, and rewards those who develop more engaging methods.

You can create a short form video and post it pretty much anywhere, but it won’t work out well because it wouldn’t be inside the tool that is designed to use that content for its own purposes.

The app manifests the content.

The core of it is the algorithms and design. The content is the result.

vine died because it was bought by twitter who killed it.

They tried to integrate it and failed at imagining the algorithms needed to encourage engagement.

it literally only failed because twitter bought it. vine literally had algorithms at the time. it wasn’t the algo’s.

you’re saying it had no algorithm when it did! that’s just untrue. do a search real quick

No I’m saying it had shitty algos and the tik tok team made the good one that included editing tools to allow short form video actually succeed

As it happens, I just finished talking about this on the TGFN podcast, we'll have a book review episode out in a week or two on The Shallows, and what the internet is doing to our brains. Tiktok is distraction and mind control technology and erodes our individual sovereignty and memory. Part of this comes from its algorithms, part from the design.

I don't think short form video content is inherently bad (I for example really like Marco Polo), I'd be very interested to see what people can do by re-building it on nostr. I'm just probably not the person to do so.

i think that’s every single social media though. i mean every social media has copied the tiktok video scroll. reels on ig and twitter will just keep scrolling videos based on the algorithm. it’s not okay at all, but we have to remember that it’s not just one.

Yeah, absolutely agreed. I'm honestly not even sure "social media" as we understand it is redeemable, but I'm going to try. I do think digital marketplaces, chat groups, and other things on a smaller scale are more obviously beneficial to society.

i agree with you.

also will never understand why people let their children on anything especially tiktok. ipad kids scare me bad

Horrifying, might as well let them have meth

i mean they’re prescribing kids adderall like it’s candy so they basically are 😭

😬 you're right, I forgot about that

we’re fucked.

the things my friend who’s an elementary school teacher tells me about how the kids are these days is worst than horror movies.

parents don’t want to parent anymore. it’s so sad

☹️

A toddler overdosed on fentanyl in the Bronx this week. The daycare workers forgot to clean up their sidegig stuff 😣

😢

nice, I’ll keep an eye (ear?) out for the pod.

agreed on all fronts! I won’t be building it either but I hope someone does.

w8 so is nostr designed for a social media connection or a reflection?
