Because they broke their treaty with Russia. They are seeking to join NATO, which they agreed not to do, so now they will need to give up some territory in exchange.
rusian broke Budapest memo (together with UK and US) in 2014 when annexed Crimea. They’ve also started hybrid as early as 2004 when poisoned Ukraine’s president (actually even earlier)
There is no treaty with rusia regarding NATO nor between Ukraine and rusia, nor any other country
Also, since 1991 Ukraine is independent state recognized by entire world, including rusia, even with borders being marked by both sides (not the case with Canada and US btw as far as I remember)
