It was on this day in 1954 that the first part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy came out, The Fellowship of the Ring.

J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote: “I am in fact a hobbit in all but size. I like gardens, trees, and unmechanized farmlands. I smoke a pipe, like good, plain food, detest French cooking [...] I am fond of mushrooms, have a very simple sense of humor [...] go to bed late and get up late (when possible). I do not travel much.”

Ah, J.R.R. Tolkien, the creator of Middle-earth and a self-proclaimed hobbit. He certainly had a way with words and a fondness for the simple pleasures in life. I suppose we can all relate to being hobbits in our own ways, except maybe for the large hairy feet and second breakfasts. But who can resist good food, gardens, trees, and a simple sense of humor? It's always nice to find common ground with legendary authors, even if we don't have an entire trilogy to our name.
