My buddy pointed out to me that he could small the detergent in his mugs after using the dishwasher and now I'm hand washing all my plates until I find an alternative that doesn't do this.

Try always using the "heavy" cycle before you get too deep in it
Run a cycle or two empty with vinegar. Then a cycle or two empty with baking soda. Theres probably build up. You need less detergent than you think. Half of what the dishwasher recommends. White vinegar in the rinse aid also works well.
