When I was in residency, if a nurse called and reported a pain score of 6 or higher and we didn’t order an opioid, they would write you up.
I don’t blame nursing, they were under pressure from the hospital.

Can confirm this happens.
Sometimes they page you because a patient needs a little too much attention at night, and they want you to knock them out with Ativan.
This was at the beginning of the “pain is the 5th vital sign” era. Things are different now, but back then it was considered inhumane to let a patient experience any pain at all.
