If you grow them from the start you can pull the thorns off of the trunk with pliers (I learned to snap them off with my fingers). Once gone they never grow back.

This doesn't cover the fallen branches however, but it does completely clean off the trunk.

Black Locust, or Honey Locust ?

Honestly, both.

Black locust charges the soil with nitrogen and provides leafy, high protein animal forage.

Honey locust doesn’t fertilize the soil but its carbohydrate drop for forage is insane.
