Stop onboarding people with WoS
It’s a custodial solution and nobody should be onboard like this.
It’s like helping people to by bitcoin on an exchange and skip the „Not your keys not your coins“ part

What self-custody solution do you suggest for onboarding?
I like phoenix, but it is costly to open your first channels. So it is kind of demotivating in my opinion, that you need 2-3000sats or more to start to using Phoenix.
What else is there, that would be a good option?
Somehow I think, you need steps. You can't let them know everything at the beginning.
It's a journey.
If you can hook them at the beginning, they can learn everything.
If you tell them too much, they will get confused, and decide it's not for them.
Agree, downloading the wallet from the app store and copying/pasting the address is even too much for many casual users. I have even stopped mentioning NIP-05 to new users.
