Was I the only person that didn't know that the official name of Taiwan is "Republic of China" because apparently their government claims to be the legitimate government of the entire China since when the communists took power?

The ROC used to exist on the mainland, but as the communists gained power, they retreated to Taiwan. When I was a child, there were people who still hoped the ROC would regain control of the mainland.
They kept the name, and also historic and cultural treasures beyond the traditional script. You can see these in the national museum.
