You really need to look at a longer term than “always profitable”. The suggested $5/mo number is low enough that most ppl will not think twice. What you need to do is model the system and understand: 1) that most ppl will never use $5 of resources; and 2) where the crossover to profitable point is. Then plan accordingly. It is going to be hard to it with no risk for some period.

OTOH, the relay is pretty lightweight on a per event basis versus a “unit of server”.

at some point people are going to start talking about legal liabilities of hosting content on relays and whatever protections are required are also going to cost relay operators money 😬

There are certainly considerations in non-US jurisdictions, but section 230 protection would certainly extend to relays. In particular, since they **only** handle text

yeah, me neither. i believe that liability is limited where there is no actual knowledge of unlawful content, but that a notice and take down regime applies, here in the uk anyway. that could become onerous. i’d be interested in any discussions about this.
