This basically looks like an updated version of ChangeTip, but without the custodial wallet.

How is it not custodial? How do you get the sats? Do you have to set it up before you can receive?

That’s what I’m trying to understand, but I recall hearing about a use case for Spark where someone could send you a temporary one-off payment that could be claimed in a wallet with your private key and then sent anywhere via Lightning. I don’t understand the spec well enough yet.

I guess that answers that. Definitely custodial. I didn’t set up anything

How do you define this as custodial, just curious?

nostr:npub18m4nmc2wchzgcmzvnluqjzxyrpshp64mwje2vuz60kulny3v6c0qtgcl2x posts here occasionally, btw.

if the bitcoin is locked to some key only i have access to. if i was zapped on X there is no way this could be possible.

That image didn’t load, but I assume it’s just generating a key and sending money to it before DMing the recipient the key?

I don't think that BitBit is using DMs for anything. Those BitBit posts you see (like ".... just tipped ___ 21 sats")... I believe they are doing those with (possibly expensive) API credits from X. So it's actually costing them money to make those posts... they do NOT seem to request and "write" access to the user's X account, only "read" access. Regarding the actual zapping/funds movement, I believe it is all happening within Spark -- that's how they are able to support refunds. (Because refunding Lightning payments is pretty difficult....)....... Like Spark as a whole, I don't think it's really accurate to describe this as "non-custodial", but also, who cares, the main thing is: Can they bring zapping to X? If they can, I don't care how they get there, I am all for it!!

yeah seems more like an unsustainable marketing gimmick

Everything is unsustainable until you raise $25m in VC funding, then everything is sustainable again!

Honestly if I were about to plunk down 10 BTC to help BTC adoption, an unsustainable zapping campaign on X that will be shut down anyway in 6 months... might be the best bang for the buck! It could at least teach 100,000 people that they need to get on Nostr to do this for real....

nostr:npub18m4nmc2wchzgcmzvnluqjzxyrpshp64mwje2vuz60kulny3v6c0qtgcl2x how many people has Spark brought to nostr?

To claim your “crypto” please take a selfie and two pictures of your ID for verification.

Who says it isn't custodial?

spark markets themselves as a non custodial solution for things, i dunno

A mechanism for zapping on Twitter is separate from the Spark protocol though? Maybe I missed some claim

I don’t know anything about spark so if you say so

I'm unsure of Spark myself, but it sounds like "BitBit" is implementing zaps, which obviously can be done a number of ways. Might just send an app notification and use background processing to complete the zap

Part of this video explains how the idea of wallets as rewards could work. Sorry in advance for the Taproot Wizards watermark, that wasn’t my idea.

"As long as operators delete keys"

Honestly, I'm not sure how anyone makes it past this sentence. If I'm going to trust them to delete keys, why not just go custodial?

A tree of "unilateral exits"

They have a lot of complicated key rewriting making it difficult to understand, but any scheme of this nature needs to prove it isn't vulnerable to an early transaction forcing a whole subtree on-chain to defend funds. Your 15,000₿ wallet isn't worth anything if someone waits for a high fee environment and it takes 10,000₿ to defend, plus another UTXO to get back in.

But I've been hacking on something that I think is better, so there's some conflict of interest here

Awesome. I miss ChangeTip. That's how I started this journey.

I still have some of their merch.

I'm a little jelous, but also relieved I didn't spend sats on ChangeTip merch back then.😅

I didn’t either. They sent me a box of it when they shut down because I was one of their top users. I gave most of it away to friends.

Cool.
