I don't think that's far off, psychic profit is a concept in the study of praxeological economics; its probably the best explanation for why you would do anything for free, your profit is real but immaterial. I think even today, depending on cultural cohesion and economic status its not rare to find the exchange of goods for physical presence, look at people lining up to serve food to the homeless. That said, its important to understand this still isn't free, its just that the psychic profit is valued higher than the time or money invested.
