How likely/possible/doable would it be to make a successful YouTube alt (rumble, Bitchute, odysee, dlive etc etc) on nostr?

#asknostr

Is this flare? I've seen a handful of technical criticisms of flare already, I'm not smart enough to understand. (But some obvious hurdles would be the need to purchase space in s@ts, probably needs to tone down the b!tcoin magazine-ish front page). Blah blah blah.

But as a market, the YouTube alt world seems like a good place to take a stand, what with rumble apparently being censored in some countries, odysee possibly shutting down -ish, Bitchute possibly censoring etc...

I have nothing to contribute except an ignorant hope lolol.

copyright problems will persist

expenses of multimedia hosting

complexity of self-hosting for a normie

should it be algorithmic/non-algorithmic?

Yeah 🤔

I suppose I'm sort of thinking, that perhaps these problems won't be solvable but an alternative with dominate (and are already) that are 'good enough' without completely solving these issues. So there could be a 'good enough' version on nostr. I don't know lol.

Fountain supports video streaming and clips now, might be another one for you to look at, in addition zap.stream that also supports VODs

I've tried fountain, didn't realise it had video. Is it also on browser? 🤔 Probably needs to be something made from scratch that isn't so b!tcoin influencer populated(?)

Zapstream is a good possibility tho, not sure if it does video hosting other than VODs of streams (?)

I open fountain

I see this

I close fountain

oh

i don't know anything about her

Tbh I don't either, just another bitfluencer, which is fine, but it's a terrible first impression to a neutral user. You open an app and see that or open flare and see their front-page and people think ah this is for b!tcoiners / is dominated by that content, it's not viable for a content creator trying to reach a wider audience. ( Also a nostr socials app problem too tbh).

was this before or after logging in to the app?

This is just their website. I deleted the app a while ago to make space for cat gifs

i approve of your priorities

😂

At least your getting your signal from boomer

There's already Peertube, but anything that hosts media has trouble scaling because of dodgy content more than anything else.

Most Peertube instances are really heavily locked down because of that, Nostr would be poisoned by it too. Even image hosting would be problematic on Nostr, it works because all media is hosted somewhere else.

I forgot peertube, not tried it yet. It feels like a video platform perhaps doesn't need to be 100% like a nostr social app maybe? Is it worth making a 'good enough' platform that would be widely used? I feel like that whoever comes to dominate the YouTube alt world is currently/will be just that. But it could be something that at least points to the wider nostr world. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I really don't know. Just chatting shit on boxing day:)

Sure, what I'm saying is there are good enough decentralized platforms (peertube is really good), but the problem is the illegal content that gets uploaded once they grow.

You get to a point where an admin can't curate everything, people get cute and hide stuff in the middle of innocuous videos, you have copyright claims to worry about, etc. That needs serious tech and centralized management to overcome (e.g. people having the ability to remove content). You have legal reporting implications, etc. It's that bit that sucks, not so much coming up with the platform.

So you'd need a more classical company with deep pockets that tries to take on YouTube by coming up with an alternative site that uses a similar model. I say deep pockets because a video hosting website is about the most taxing thing you can try to run on the Internet if you're serious about it.

Yes I see your point. I must stress I have no idea what I'm talking about. Just musing in my pants:)

So, you're saying we need nostr:npub1sg6plzptd64u62a878hep2kev88swjh3tw00gjsfl8f237lmu63q0uf63m to buy odysee. Loud and clear 🫡

I feel like rumble/odysee (I have no opinion on peertube, as I'm unfamiliar with it). Are 'good enough', simple enough to use, and reach a wide enough audience for most content creators. Likewise twitter under Elon probably has secured 'good enough' for social/ micro logging. I was listening to a cultural commentator yesterday stream and that does seem to be the case for many. There's a trade off, they need to reach a wide audience for it to be viable/worthwhile. They were streaming on odysee and we're questioning the future of their video content, having been banned off YouTube multiple times. It feels like people are shopping around still for long-term/stable YouTube alt, in a way that they're not (currently) for a twitter alt.

It sounds like a very complicated and costly problem to solve tho.

PeerTube is mostly limited by encoding capability of the server, which is one of several issues every host will face. The second is storage.

I'm not a technical guy In any sense when it comes to this kind of stuff.

But it seems to me any alternative has to simply be used in order to replace youtubes dominance.

But then do we really want or need too ??

What follows assumes the Royal too speak.

On content I always advise posting the content we want to see, if we're into a subject others will be and they will use that platform to view it. Some platforms will always be niche depending on which community is the early adopter. But diversifying content will help people adopt it.

The UI experience has to showcase that content and be easy to use.

Personally I think odysee is the best fit for nostr if we can get a campaign going to convince them to swapped LBC for satoshis. And allow NPUB sign in and relay connection for access.

Hosting and server space is always going to be an issue. Bitchute at least is attempting to solve that problem.

Everything else is cultural. If socially we are moving to a more decentralised tech/finance way of living with more self-reliance permaculture types then the social places those people interact on will survive.

So ultimately I think the solution is a cultural one rather than a tech one.

I don't know if that helps, I'm just babbling through a meat haze 🤣

It helps. You know more than me.

Odysee is apparently going up for auction, I was thinking along the same lines. Something like odysee, with nostr account creation and comments as notes, with nostr donation/tipping system. Just pie in the sky thinking lol.

Same here, sometimes you just gotta say something outloud to see if it makes sense, and how knows maybe someone will have a bright idea.. that someone not being me 🤣🤣

I do take your point. However... Lol

The 'post the content you want to see' is not really what a content creator eg a cultural/political commentator wants to be doing. Nostr is not their project, it is merely a platform to them. They want to connect to their audience, attract more, have a cultural impact or whatever it is. I can see why twitter under new management is 'good enough' for them as a platform for their usage (and most are under no illusions about the shortcomings).

I think the video platform is the contested space currently. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ imo imo lol

It's an old saying, basically observing that some things become niche and some don't.

Old style forums are a classic example. I wouldn't post about my garden on a ham radio forum.

But if a video hosting site wants to appeal to the masers it has to have a diverse spread of content. Which you've observed about flare and fountain and their bitcoin centric recommendations.

However fountain is improving, I follow permaculture, bitcoin and philosophy channels over there. So it's changing 👍🏻

I really think the hosting cannot be centralised. If its centralised, its a honeypot for the censorious, the avaricious and the stalker-y, henceforth referred to as government.

I love Bittorrent, but I am yet to see a good integration with the HTML world.

https://ipfs.io is a newer protocol that integrates better, and clients are available for every major platform. Its still a bit slow out of the gate for high-def long-form video, but the more people who watch (and cache) an IPFS-hosted video the faster it gets!

Knowledge Standards Foundation is working on making encyclopedic content available via BitTorrent in the webbrowser. Torrents/video content should be possible as well. As always, the worst problem would seem to be spanmers/bad actors.
