The idea is you install something like truenas on the tiny 64gb drive and let it take care of raid.
And yes, only M2 but they do come in 8tb these days. Or are you looking at a monster 3.5 inch setup with loads of 30tb drives?
No but I think the sata 8tb is much cheaper than m2 8tb?

I bought two 8tb Samsung 2.5" for a raid. One of them was dead after 18 month. I never had a failing m2 so far.
Same, never had a failing m2 but plenty of failed spinners. Maybe I should just get some m2s and call it a day.
