The Rebels were against authoritarian control. The Empire wanted to further enforce its rule on the galaxy, with deadly force. Those who opposed this attack on sovereignty were killed or hunted. The Empire objected to your individual liberties and other freedoms.
Do you side with The Empire? Because your words regarding Canada are mirroring those tenets, not the ones of a free and just people.

There's a possible benefit... Canadians appear to be as helpless as one can imagine, at the mercy of their communist/criminal government. If they think they're about to be invaded, then maybe they'll buy some guns and learn to shoot. Then, when the invasion doesn't come, people will accidentally be in a much better bargaining position vs their overlords.

I don't think anyone is talking about taking Canada by force. Rather, Canada's self destructive policies will buckle the country on their own.
