There's also a finite amount of gold on Earth, but we don't exactly what it is. That's really the only difference in this context.

Right but the more lucrative it is go go looking for new deposits, the more likely they will employ more and more technologies to find new veins. Deeper and deeper... Way. Way down.

Eventually space mining. Supposedly Gold is abundant up there.

True. Asteroid mining is a very likely near-future thing.
