And there’s nothing stopping any one client going to another platform with additional effort.

At that point the dev could just expand another existing client on that platform already. Fork it, make it better, etc.
The clients that are delivered by centralized appstores or have public authors are more likely to be kneeled on, that's the nature of the game unfortunately.
