With X down, it could be a good time to run your own Nostr node. #nostr

I don’t like that I need tor to connect to my own relay
Why?
Because I already pay for a fast vpn
You don’t want it to be on your local system? It can be hosted on a remote VPS for example
Idk what that means lol start 9 says you need to use tor to connect to the private relay 🤷♂️
VPS = virtual private server. You rent a machine where you can install a relay, or whatever else you want to host on it. You can access it via clearnet (= regular internet, not tor). That’s what I did when I setup my haven relay. There’s other solutions too, less complicated but a bit more expensive where you can create a relay and just have it hosted directly on a VPS. No need to set it up yourself. Like relay tools for example.
The start9 relay has less functionality than those. Different types of solutions for different needs.
I think Semisol was also working on personal relays integrated to nostr land.
Yeah if I run my own relay, it needs to be on my node that I control.
You mean controlling the code?
The hardware and code
You would get a dedicated machine with enough ram and juice to run a WoT relay for example. Or just a relay to backup your notes? Or something similar to haven?
A relay to backup my notes
That doesn’t require that much juice. Since you’re switching to Android, Citrine does that. On your phone. You can even use it for a little bit more advanced stuff too
You just turn on the app, should what kind of events you want backed up. It generates a local ip adress on your phone. You paste it in your relay list and your notes get backed up
What is citrine?
A personal relay on your phone. For Android. Developed by the same dev who does Amber (bunker on your phone for storing your nostr keys)
Wouldn’t this fuck my phone’s storage?
No. Nostr events don’t take that much space. It’s just text. Pictures and videos are stored on nostr build or elsewhere
But it does add up over time. Like a very active group chat.
A note doesn’t even take 1kb. And you’re just storing your own notes
🤔 primal says I have 22k replies. What would that be in storage?
Nostr band says 23469. That would be less than 23mb. Your phone memory will be just fine
2+ years of shitposting backed up with less than 23mb
Nostr.land also supports archival as well as an off site copy
Coming soon is export
What’s nice about export is that you can store copies of your notes without having to run the infrastructure of a relay
Just a single file to download every so often
How do you download this?
You want export? I’ll make export
Is this a paid feature?
Nostr.land is a paid relay ser
I’ve been thinking about paying for a relay but idk what I’m really paying for and if it’s worth it. Node was trying to run numbers last week to see how many relays are receiving notes but the numbers seem unreliable.
I only have 2 paid relays now. Nostr land and nostr wine. The new updates to land replace a lot of other relays I had so I get to optimize the amount of relays
On Nostr.land it’s pretty simple
You pay a fixed fee, and I store your notes and archive them as long as you continue paying
There’s a fair use policy but that is it (abusing the service or using an unfair amount of resources)
Unlike some other relays which want one-time fees, there’s no cross-subsidization
But how do I know if it’s actually helping me? Are my notes going to reach more users? Will I see significantly more engagement with other npubs?
Well if you want to use public relays that are free but will delete your data whenever they feel like it, and often distrusted due to containing a lot of spam, sure.
And yes, you will see more engagement, and miss less replies/DMs thanks to outbox
More reach due to blastr feature too
Can nostr.land guarantee they will never delete my data? What if feds put a gun to your head?
You don’t have to worry about that if you export regularly
You export your data?
No. Is that something you can do with a private relay on start9?
You can export it on Nostr.land if you are a paying member to have a local backup
I imagine yes
You can backup your own notes without your own relay too.
iefan has an app for that. nostrsync.vercel.app
That’s cool. There are a lot of good solutions. Really the big thing for me is just getting a larger reach for my notes but there isn’t reliable data on the relays that do it the best.
Something with a blastr
Does nostr wine also have a blastr? What’s the difference between the two?
Wine does not. It has a filter, it’s a separate relay (monthly fee) that gets notes from a list of relays and sends to another list of relays. Land has a similar feature. And a blastr.
Luxas also has a blastr, I think he told us about it last week
Also does it work with primal? 😂 jk jk
It works with ape client but if you want the full benefits of inbox, you have to.
Because your DMs and inbox are securely protected with NIP-42 auth.
Primal doesn’t support NIP-42 and to the relay looks like any unauthorized person trying to download your private DMs.
I tried that. Took 5secs to backup all my notes.
That sounds about right. I didn’t include the posts because I didn’t feel like doing the math. But yeah it’s probably fine you’re right.
