A middle-class pro pays more than $1 million in taxes over a lifetime. That’s ~20 years of obligation service just to fund the state, pre inflation! Enjoy.
Yes, while all of that is true and the cost is absurd there are things that I enjoy that I don’t take for granted a list from last week:
I welcomed my forth child into the world, spent time with my grandparents who are in their 90s, took my 3 older kids to the beach, went on bike rides, went to the range with my dad and sister then enjoyed dinner and a beer after, started a side business, stacked sats, enjoyed a shower every day, drank coffee, watched the sun rise, flushed toilets, turned on lights when I needed them, communicated with family over great distances, ate food that had been kept fresh in my refrigerator, enjoyed time with a healthy family ect ect. It’s not all doom and gloom.
What I find interesting is we complain about the government, however most people will not go out of their way to hold anyone accountable. I always ask people who complain about government or politics when the last time they went to city hall and spoke up over matters that affect them directly?
I worked it out recently the true tax rate, including inflation, is easily over 90%. It’s horrific.

It was a discussion but basically we realised that over a lifetime; income taxes eat half your income, spending shaves off another chunk through hidden taxes, and inflation quietly destroys whatever is left, unless you own scarce, taxed-to-death assets which you likely can’t afford. Inflation is the killer because it goes unnoticed by most.
