What a terrible ux. Self custody lightning will never work for the masses. You can try to do all the stuff on the backend but the architecture of the protocol itself just fundamentally will never be usable as a self custody solution by the common man. People are not going to do this.

I just know people don't want to manage channels and liquidity to spend money and I know it's not free or cheap when you obfuscate it to the end user to make it easier to onboard. We will find a way but if you want to be serious about self custody cheap Bitcoin txs for normies Lightning won't achieve that without the requirement to run a node yourself. I'm critical because I care, not because I've "given up". I make the comment specifically because I won't ever give up on bringing Bitcoin to the masses.
