Geostationary orbit of the satellites would require a fairly fancy dish mount to keep lock on same point in sky. That’s out of my league but not unusual for boat satellite folks.

Yeah gyro stabilised is the only way to go for orbital and non-geo stationary satellites. Unfortunately it’s big $$$
These are stationary. But being even a small amount off has a pretty significant impact on signal to noise ratio, especially for a small dish.
The service is very tolerant of outages. I have to look into this again, but new transaction data is transmitted real time and last six blocks are retransmitted hourly or something like that.
