It is very difficult to keep track of, but even so, it is built around this firm consensus:

"For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures... And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins." 1 Corinthians 15:3,4, & 17

Yeah, there's a core protocol and n number of implementations.

I had that idea months ago. The problem is keeping the numbering coherent. Or we need to move away from NIP numbering, since it's actually a name and not an integer ID.

Now, where things really get spicy is when various "implementations" start flirting with doctrines that have massive implications on that core protocol, and it can become difficult to tell if they are actually maintaining consensus or forking off into another faith entirely.

Yeah, confusing hard forks are confusing.
