hm some of the large follows were synthetic (I don't know details how, but i heard it a while back that its possible to game the follow count)

There are loads of fake accounts that work in concert on begging scams. I see it all the time and it makes me angry, as it really spoils everything for those of us who work hard on real content. I think many of those accounts with thousands of followers are being followed by accounts for begging/scamming, and nothing else. I suppose it ain't hard nowadays to create bot-accounts that constantly share popular memes, constantly 'engage' with likes and zaps (to fellow begging accounts mostly), and constantly share begging scams.
Had no idea it was that bad. Thanks for the heads up. I agree; direct funding best way, geyser was an experiment to try something where i didn’t have to code all the features myself and potentially increase visibility, but its clear that nostr itself is the best place. 😂😆
