it's truly an abomination, and at the root of why bsd is never going to matter anymore
it's very unfortunate now we see there is clear signs of compromise in the integrity of linux as well, but at least the ancient but still good, and unixy ext4 exists and aside from the abomination of uefi secureboot, we are still in a safe zone and i think that people are really gonna get a slap in the face in the near future over the state of linux
IMO it needs a refactor to eliminate old cruft and move everything else into a container so you can still use it but nobody is wasting their time maintaining that barf
