What I do not understand. Isn’t it obvious that support for the press from tax money can be a very efficient form to get a strong independent press.

I say can, since it all depends on laws, that need to have objectively measurable criterea to get the funds. So there is no problem for any magazin that receives this funds to print articels criticizing whatever political party, no matter on what side of the spectrum they are.

Because what the US is presenting very clear is: without state funding there is no independent press. Every media company is financed and backed by rich people with political intrest and the newspaper is not going to investigate in every scandal equally independent of color and party.
