Put the tray in a big plastic bag, and then pour the paint in that. Throw out he plastic bag, and the tray stays clean.

With tin cans, decant the paint into smaller plastic containers (eg 2kg yoghurt container with a plastic lid) Fill them up only half way, and then you can swirl the paint before use and that saves having to use a paint stirrer, messing about with the can lid which gets worse and worse as paint accumulates in the lip of the can.

When I use a caulking gun, I cut the legs off old cotton tights, wet it, and slide it over one arm and then use that to smooth out the silicone. You can roll it as you go to get a clean bit each time you caulk.

These are girlie tips which focus on convenience as well as staying as clean as possible.
