Free use of the internet by all is not possible without ZIRP. There was one 3rd party app making 7 billion Reddit API requests per month on behalf of 800,000 users. ≈10K/user/month for free. That is insane and unsustainable.

I can’t even imagine what is going on at Twitter.

Nostr will face the same problems if it ever gets popular. It isn’t even popular yet and the Damus relay is already unsustainable as a free service.

The answer isn’t to kill all anonymous use and put everything behind a KYC/AML panopticon paywall. The answer is to charge enough via bitcoin to cover the costs of running the services. Let people pay for what they use and force the free riding NGOs, intelligence agencies, and scammers to pay their own freight for their nefarious uses.

Bandwidth, storage, and compute all cost money. Relays have to cover those costs and as soon as enough people are using the relays something will have to give.

Like Adam said, they need to charge more than they pay for those resources and then they will be profitable businesses even if people misuse them. If they pay more than they charge, they will eventually get bankrupted.
