Bandwidth, storage, and compute all cost money. Relays have to cover those costs and as soon as enough people are using the relays something will have to give.

Like Adam said, they need to charge more than they pay for those resources and then they will be profitable businesses even if people misuse them. If they pay more than they charge, they will eventually get bankrupted.

Good reason to get on a paid #relay early, huh?
