People are powerless, with no ability to change the situation, many facing mountains of debt, and they are too busy chasing the ten thousand things to notice their own situation, and so things come out from their subconscious - judgement and fear. It reminds me of early American history, that "city on a hill" where everyone watched everyone, and the result was the Salem Witch Trials.
