Why do we still buy (rent?) phone numbers?
No one needs these numbers anymore. End them.
I think I have used my phone's PHONE function exactly once when I accidentally tapped that button.

You still need cellular services for internet access (even data-only SIM), which gives a phone number to identify you from other cellular devices 🤷♂️.
There are data only plans that dont give you a number.
