#grownostr My kids have been in martial arts for over 5 years now. I'm blessed to be able to give them this experience. My wife and I got into it for a few years before injuries forced us to the sidelines. I can't recommend it enough. While the discipline, mental and physical health benefits are huge, the biggest benefit is the community of our dojo. If you have ever thought about it, go for it!

That's awesome! I feel chess is also great for kids, in a different but similar way, of course ;). Currently I'm starting to teach our 6 yr old granddaughter chess! #grownostr

nice. I'm happy my kids know how to play at least. Not sure I could at 9!

I've got a 5yr old in Taekwondo myself. He's loving it and its great for him.

Did you filter through teachers/studios or luck out with a good teacher on the first try?

We were very fortunate to have a pretty good Sensei. Its been frustrating at times, constant class schedule changes, but we have stayed.

There have been guest instructors at times, some better than others, and of course drama (some of these kids are super high level competitive). I've always felt the benefits outweighed the little issues that pop up from time to time.

There are a couple more options within reasonable distances, and our Sensei has told us to go try them out even, so I feel very comfortable where we are.

Couldn’t agree more. 2nd degree black belt in karate, yellow belt in jujitsu, helper at the dojo. My 3 older kids are black belts and some of the younger ones are on their way along their journey. Great way to teach discipline, hard work, attention to detail, perseverance, the ability to take some pain, and self defense.
