It doesn't matter what you and I think. People should be free to do whatever they want in their profile.

Are they not already free to add or not add gender to their bio?
I think that is really the point people have been making.
Personally I don't actually care but I lean in the direction of it being unnecessary.
Implying that somehow this adds freedom to people on their profile is sketchy. They were already completely free to do so before.
Adding a new field for gender and thinking it adds anything when there is already a completely freeform bio field to use for all that?
Total honesty this just reeks of #wokeism and more dividing and categorizing.
🙄
It's really no bid deal. The profile on Nostr is already for them to add as many fields as they want. Many clients have this option to allow users to express themselves as fields. The one on amethyst is literally just 10 or so lines of code. It took me less than 5 mins to add. it's not really any burden.
To me it is way more important that users can express themselves in anyway they, and only they, see fit.
I'll be honest, I think your reasoning seems flimsy here in that you are just doing it because people might want it.
There was a fork of Amethyst called Garnet that added Monero tipping. I was curious how Nostr would handle something non-Bitcoin so I followed that for a bit.
It crashed and burned, that said, there was a user demand for that. Are you adding space for Monero addresses because people should be free to put what they want in their profile?
Cashu and lightning will have support for multiple coins soon via Taproot assets. If that happens, and gets enough usage, we will integrate them. It all depends how many users ask for.
The Garnet one was just poorly made. I don't really know if there is a market need for Monero because, quite literally, no one has ever asked me to do it. Monero was a fun experiment, but I don't think anyone really wants to link a privacy coin with a public identity. It doesn't make much sense.
To be clear, I'm not asking for it either, it just was an example of people wanting to do something with profiles that went against the grain of what a large chunk of nostr users wanted, but with a vocal group that did want it.
I will say I didn't expect that answer. I figured that was a line that wasn't going to be crossed. I take back what I said.
Yes, Garnet kind of lost momentum (maybe someone will fork it in the future). There is a small Garnet bounty to bring it up to date and fix some things, but check out mostard.org for an alternative web client
By the way, you can tip users notes without broadcasting to the Nostr network (and it was the default for Garnet). Similar to your "Non-Zap" feature on Amethyst
I remember there being a couple red flags with it, first it didnt keep up with the updates and then its creator wasnt on nostr, or wasn't able to be found. Its easy to find Vitor and whine about shit we have no ability to build ourselves haha.
Amethyst having multiple currencies was my example because it would cause a shit storm on here, but it sounds like Amethyst's philosophy really is the kitchen sink - if it exists and people want it, it will be added. Very interesting
