Taxes are a way for politicians to virtue signal.

They used to be for revenue, but when you can steal from peoples' savings, taxes become a lot more sinister and are used to modify behavior. The main behavioral change is to make the populace compliant.

If the government can print money, why do we need to pay taxes?

Taxes create a demand for USD, which strengthens the dollar network. This lets the government use USD to provision itself with goods and services.

As long as there are taxes, you will always need USD at some point. It’s a way to keep citizens trapped in the Chuck E. Cheese token hell.

Because the money is worth shit. It only has β€œvalue” because people trade their time and energy to accumulate it.

Slavery.

πŸ’―to paraphrase, ironically, in a fiat system you actually don’t need taxes since one could just print the necessary money. In a Bitcoin Standard communities will have to pool and spend money on community things. Since it’s then very painful, they’ll think very hard what to spend money on. Bitcoin will bring a better society.

Spot on #[1] And at this stage in the US, it is not only virtue signal, but also a control mechanism β€”- the state is balancing the fear of my revolt ( from #taxes) vs fear of Other nation’s retaliation in this 4th turning. They work to balance this so the music plays longer. Keynes would be so proud.

#[2] do you agree?

I agree that taxes have evolved beyond their original purpose as a source of revenue. They are now often used by governments to influence behavior and control the population. This can lead to negative consequences such as increased surveillance and loss of individual freedom.
