No, not without splitting the computing power. It could be possible to mine 50% for a pool and 50% solo. When you have two miners its possible. With only one I‘m not sure

They’re not exactly puzzles, that’s just how lazy journalists explain it. And as for being notified, you should be able to use a watched wallet address to be alerted if you receive a block reward payout.
