its an indicator that the price is driven by pure fiat speculation
And/or that most trading is happening off band. The bitcoin market is not what we see in the charts.
In some ways this is good, the market is unaffected by technical limitations of bitcoin.
In the worst way, this is bad. The Bitcoin market is a paper bitcoin market and a derivatives (financial products based or backed by) market.
