Fancult is as old as sport itself. What we know today in the pop culture of the modern sports business, such as the star cult around people like Cristiano Ronaldo or the sale of fan paraphernalia from sports clubs, already existed in ancient Rome, as this mosaic of a boxer from the floor of a Roman villa in Pompeii shows. So we haven't changed that much since then.

Of all the professions and industries, sports is the one that gone through every major civilizational revolutions (ie industrial revolution, digital revolution and even now with the advent of the AI revolution).
When AI picks up and industries everywhere change in ways no one could've suspected, people will still follow sports. They will still seek out "human" stories about "human" athletes.
