In March 2024, nine individuals, including eight children and an adult, lost their lives after consuming sea turtle meat on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago.

Additionally, 78 other individuals were hospitalized.

Despite the risk of chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning that can lead to fatalities, sea turtle meat is regarded as a delicacy by the people of Zanzibar.
