I think that’s pretty much the least generous way you could frame this.
From my perspective, a bunch of people just arrived to the town I live in. They have no money, barely any clothes. They’re sleeping on cardboard boxes along the highway. Our little tourist beach town of 2k people doesn’t have anything to offer these people. So, we offer them food, water, and a bus ticket to the next stop along the way.
Their social media is filled with “news” telling them that what they’re doing is completely legal and the US will have jobs, shelter, food, money, healthcare waiting for them.
Their friends and family that made this trip already are confirming this to them over WhatsApp- we had a similar wave of this in late October last year, right before the US elections.
They don’t want to stay here, and they won’t be allowed to re-enter Panama even if I could convince them to turn around (which would be impossible because their “news” and their family and friends are telling them).
