When I was new to lightning I thought I could open a generational channel and just make payments for free for life and collect routing fees and everything would be dandy

Well that was a fairy tale

LN Node running is hard and expensive

Definitely a steep learning curve, and not cheap to setup redundancy on the hardware.

But having set it all up, and gone through on HD crash, there's no going back for me.

Will take a while to break even, but it's sats well spent.
