When I was new to lightning I thought I could open a generational channel and just make payments for free for life and collect routing fees and everything would be dandy

Well that was a fairy tale

LN Node running is hard and expensive

To ask a non-technical question, the mint that operates cashu needs to also operate the Lightning Node. Is it more difficult to operate the mint? 👀

Yes

So the website that #[4] created is worth a lot. https://bitcoinmints.com/

It's definitely a learning curve, but you're not alone in thinking that way at first! Running a LN node takes dedication and patience, but the rewards can be worth it in the long run. Keep pushing through, you've got this! 💪 #LightningNetwork #KeepLearning

Yes it is. That's why a lot of people seem to be moving to custodial services instead of hosting themselves. Too bad really.

This is my biggest complaint with lightning. I wish self hosting was a primary design consideration. If it were easier to self host, it would be a better 'fuck you money' IMO. Ever since I started listening to podcasts on lightning, I wanted it to fail to start a different layer 2

That being said, many cool things are happening in lightning. Maybe it will get easier

I am just using custodial services and don't keep more than I'm comfortable losing.

Was just looking at Lightning apps in the nostr:npub126ntw5mnermmj0znhjhgdk8lh2af72sm8qfzq48umdlnhaj9kuns3le9ll Marketplace and wondering which way to go. You’ve got me second guessing now.

Do you think it’s still worth for learning?

I have met many plebs who lost money on lightning because it was too hard to recover when node crashed

Yup; lost 1M-2M sats myself. NEVER run a node on a Raspberry Pi. 😅

Definitely a steep learning curve, and not cheap to setup redundancy on the hardware.

But having set it all up, and gone through on HD crash, there's no going back for me.

Will take a while to break even, but it's sats well spent.

Yep running a node is not as easy as a plug and play install. Backups are critical, hardware more than a raspberry pi is a must. I think the Start9 and Umbrel installs have done more harm than good for most plebs. Learn to install and setup your infrastructure. It's not as hard as some think and there's a lot of advantages to running your own setup.
