Is there any reason to keep a smaller set of relays instead of a larger one?
I suppose spam reduction is better if you only connect to paid relays that offer spam reduction?

I would like to hear some reasoning about this too.
I have performance issues on Damus if I’m connected to 25+ relays. App freezes and general sluggishness. Also, you consume a lot of data. The more relays you have, the more data will be consumed. It might become an issue on mobile

I'm still new to this, but would it possibly limit the content you see from certain people you follow?
(E.g. if they're only on relays that you aren't following, I'm assuming you won't see them or their posts?)
