I love the efficiency of ASL - BSL is great, but if an alligator ate your hand, for instance, you're fucked for spelling anything except the letter C 😆

Discussion
Well... *some* of us are ambidextrous, so we could spare one hand (though, definitely optimal)
Isn't asl alphabet all one hand? There was a joke someone showed me once, spelling the word "dive" as a series of figures along their other arm, with the hand simulating jumping from the level arm as it made the E shape
Yes, the ASL alphabet uses just one hand; Others like French Sign, Australian Sign, etc use two hands simultaneously.
And yes- Things like the fun "artsy" play-with-signs/jokes will be affected if one becomes Captain Hook 🪝
That's interesting to learn, given that Aussie sign stems from BSL and ASL stems from French Sign language, I'd have assumed that ASL would have picked up the 1 hand alphabet thing from French - now wondering how that came to pass...you learn something new every day 😁
💯- I'm actually (voice) interpreting for a Deaf teacher right now + asked her if she knows why Americans developed a one-handed alphabet, being that LSQ is foundational to ASL...
She, too, is at a loss.
🤷♀️
That's really cool, I wish I'd carried on to the interpreter level, I always thought it'd be great fun to be the little guy in the corner of the telly or something, my little ones second cousin used to do that...if you or the teacher ever come across an answer to the one handed alphabet thing let me know...till I get a proper answer I'm gonna assume it was so they could carry their gun while holding a conversation 😮😆
If I find the answer, I'll pass it on!
(ah, yes- The interpreter on the 📺... I've been offered such interpreting assignments (emergency/health broadcasts), but never liked the idea of being on 📺. A few of my colleagues enjoy it, though)
Most of my interpreting experience is in Education HS/Uni, Healthcare (Hospitals, Psychiatric Facilities), Law Enforecement (police/investigations), social work visits, etc. - a dynamic career, for sure!
