If you don't want to buy anything for it then yes, but we all have non-zero time-preference, so at some point we all want to buy something valuable.
You use it as collateral to borrow ever-depreciating fiat against your ever/appreciating bitcoin. You use the borrowed fiat to acquire assets that yield fiat and creat a positive cash flow that pays back the loan, plus a profit for yourself. You never need to liquidate your bitcoin.
This is the wayx
Maybe this is your way. But I would never trust anyone to store my Bitcoin as collateral. No one will give you a loan if only you hold the keys.
That's exactly the issue, and if you do smart contract, you get liquidated the second you are undercollaterized, plus you need to use other blockchain, no real bitcoins.
Maybe we can imagine a kind of multisign wallet with miniscript, both party must sign and agree to renew before every year (limitation of miniscript, you cannot make it longer yet), then we could imagine the signature scheme change for 2 of 3, with the third one being a trust external third party, like a lawyer, then after again some time additional backup thirs party could be added to prevent anyone from losing access in case one party + third party loose their keys.
But until we can do that, you are right, spending your BTC might be the only way for a large expense like housing.
My problem is with a 2 of 3 multisig that I will never trust anyone with an "overriding" power. I made peace with that and as soon as I value something more than my Bitcoin I will sell a portion of my holdings for it. Currently I can only think about an early retirement to buy with it Time and possibly a cheap land with a small house somewhere far away from anyone.
Then go ahead and sell your bitcoin, which is... better how?
There's this thing called multisig.
I know, but I don't trust anyone to have an "overriding" power. It's better to sell it then to think that to trust in a multisig that someone is not stealing/confiscating it. When I sell X amount I sold X amount. But as a loan collateral I can loose at least the double amount of it. Just think about BlockFi...FTX...
Well, I don't see this happening any time soon, and I'm not in a hurry... until maybe 2030, which is when I would like to stop doing salaried work. Then, I will start to get impatient 😂
