the first rule of ubuntu is: do not upgrade the kernel

the second rule of ubuntu is: DO NOT UPGRADE THE KERNEL

the third rule of ubuntu is: remove kernel metapackages and enable the menu in /etc/default/grub setting it to menu timeout mode and put a nice 10 second delay so if THE KERNEL IS UPGRADED at least it is not hard for you to either pick the old working one or go to the UEFI bios

Why use Ubuntu in the first place?

i'm not, i'm using zorin, it's the first out of like 5 options i've tried that boots into a working X due to its suitable amdgpu drivers and kernel version:

Linux iox 6.2.0-39-generic #40~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu Nov 16 10:53:04 UTC 2 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

i could not get manjaro to work, ubuntu 20 worked but CPU rendered, ubuntu 22 didn't work, ubuntu 23 didn't work, solus didn't work, i would have tried arch linux next probably if this didn't work as it's reliable but a lot of work to get set up

i read up on the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and it was barely supported by anything until mid January, even though Phoronix had made it work, they didn't really explain exactly what kernel versions they used, they only said ubuntu 23 and 6.2+ and it's already been my experience with 2 year old AMD gear, 5500M on a laptop, which was super hit and miss on anything except 5.15 - and it worked on this one too, but without acceleration

i've been using ubuntu on and off since 2008 or so, and it has always been the most irritating thing about the distro - always has a kernel metapackage that upgrades and breaks drivers, used to be network, sound and video, now mostly it's just video, and even this zorin, it wasn't even clear watching it do the upgrade, even disabling to upgrade while installing, that it installs a not working kernel 6.5 that gives nice black screens

considering the pain it just cost me, almost 24 hours of my life, and about 4 hours sleep, i just wasn't going to surrender to running windows on it just because it worked, i had to keep trying because if it can run a framebuffer it can usually run the GPU also

the linux kernel is shocking for AMD Radeon support these days, versions 4 and 5 were ok but 6 is a third world pothole filled road with pungee traps and unexploded ordnance waiting for you to fall into it

Ok this sounds pretty painful, I had pretty good experience with Fedora, but also running a 10 year old thinkpad so hardware support shouldn't be a problem anyways

Endeavor OS is my preferred distro (installer). I keep my system as close to stock as possible, use it for one purpose and one purpose only (running bitcoind), and blindly install any and all updates.

can you show me in this doll where the kernel touched you?

honestly, I had this pain in like 2007.... today I'm updating kennel up and down no problem. weird.

yeah, because you don't use AMD video, this doesn't affect nvidia

which is hilarious because AMD drivers are open source, you'd think that would mean LESS problems not MORE

i'm sure Nvidia isn't paying kernel developers tho, not one bit...

AMD has big enemies, and NVDA has been given a giant steroid injection with the AI hype train, and everyone is expacting a blow-off top on its stock price any minute now, but it's a huge amount of pressure against the more linux friendly AMD dev strategy

i'm sure AMD will win in the end, but probably not until kernel 7
